Sultan's Game Card Combo Guide: Optimal Break Strategies

The 28 Sultan cards (or 44 in New Game+) are the central challenge of the game. Breaking them efficiently—using the right events, in the right order, with the right characters—is the difference between survival and execution. This guide covers advanced card-breaking strategies and combos.

The Card Break Queue Strategy

The Core Concept

Maintain a "break queue" of events that can break cards. Keep low-tier events available for low-tier cards, and save high-tier events for high-tier cards.

Queue Management Rules

  1. Never waste a high-tier event on a low-tier card. A house expansion (breaks any Extravagance) should be saved for Gold Extravagance if possible.
  2. Keep one event of each type in reserve. Always have a backup plan for each card type.
  3. Use the card swap strategically. On day 6 (or 13, 20), swap an unmanageable card for something you have a queued event for.
  4. Don't break cards early. Wait until the deadline (day 7) to break. This maximizes your event options.

Card Type Break Strategies

Extravagance Cards (Easiest to Manage)

Gold-tier Extravagance:

  • House Expansion (Methinks): Can break ANY Extravagance, limited to one use. Save for Gold.
  • Hot Air Balloon Expansion: Gold-tier specific
  • Gold Bird Event: Random trigger, 30 gold purchase, breaks Gold
  • Mahlir's Research: High-tier items can break Gold after completion

Silver-tier Extravagance:

  • Tribal Treasure Expansion: Requires 10 infamy to trigger Conquest event first
  • Tapestry Corridor: Requires tapestry item, breaks Silver
  • Observatory: Requires telescope, breaks Bronze

Bronze/Rock-tier Extravagance:

  • Big Spend (after house expansion): Limited to Rock/Bronze
  • Bathhouse events: Some break lower-tier Extravagance
  • House expansion (if not saving for Gold): Breaks any tier

Extravagance Strategy: This is the easiest card type. The house expansion alone handles one card of any tier. Prioritize using other methods for low-tier cards and save the house expansion for Gold.

Carnality Cards (Moderate Difficulty)

Gold-tier Carnality:

  • Maggie (Wife): After two Fate Shop upgrades, can break Gold at home. Note: locations get "Carnality Mark" and can't be reused for the same character.
  • Zazie (Sultan's Favorite): In court, requires 30 gold, +3 charm equipment, and a treasure. Complex but possible.
  • Faraj (Noble Admirer): After two Fate Shop upgrades or early "abandon consent" (causes him to leave). May develop passion later.
  • Arzuna (Dancer): Fate Shop unlock, auto-trigger event chain upgrades her to Gold. Has passion for protagonist. Requires two Gold charm equipment (10 total charm).

Silver-tier Carnality:

  • Wife's Tea Party: Specific conditions
  • Special Pillow Events: Various triggers
  • Pleasure House (Brothel): Match prostitute tier, but generates Wife's Discontent

Bronze/Rock-tier Carnality:

  • Home Debauchery (Methinks): Unlimited uses, choose matching-tier character. Passionate characters (Maggie, those with "Passion" tag) agree. Non-consent causes character to leave.
  • Pleasure House: Match prostitute tier
  • Court Carnality: Bring card to court, Sultan forces a consort on you (triggers storyline)

Carnality Strategy: Track which characters have used which locations (hidden "Carnality Mark" tag). Gold Carnality is the hardest—prepare your targets in advance through Fate Shop upgrades.

Bloodshed Cards (Hardest to Manage)

Gold-tier Bloodshed:

  • Chancellor Abdul: Most common target
    • Insert into policy-making event (Gold only)
    • Court duel (requires beating him + two champions, 20 combat + 20 physique)
    • Nawfal's coup line may allow killing him
  • Fate Shop-upgraded followers: Arzuna, Faraj, Maggie, Hilshina (if upgraded)
  • Seliman's Head: Bring to court, breaks Rock/Bronze/Silver
  • Little Crocodile in Bathhouse: Breaks Rock/Bronze/Silver

Silver-tier Bloodshed:

  • Challenge Everywhere: High infamy triggers people coming to kill you (you can kill them back)
  • Criminal Refugees: High infamy criminals come seeking shelter; killing one stops them from appearing
  • Fight to the Death: High infamy, people ask you to kill their enemies or themselves

Bronze/Rock-tier Bloodshed:

  • "Cruel Sacrifice" (Methinks): Kill a follower. Last resort.
  • Court Duel: Challenge any current speaking noble. Next day, physique + combat vs. theirs.
  • Pleasure House: Pay prostitute then kill. Increases infamy, triggers retaliation.

Bloodshed Strategy: This is the most likely card type to stall your run. Always maintain a "kill list" of expendable characters. Build up infamy proactively to enable Bloodshed events. The Chancellor is your Gold Bloodshed target—plan for him.

Conquest Cards (Variable Difficulty)

Gold-tier Conquest:

  • Shama's Father: Requires troops. Trigger: 10+ infamy AND 1+ passion for Shama.
  • Hilshina (as Great Adversary): If he becomes your sworn enemy, he comes for you.
  • Random Conquest Events (5): Trigger at 10+ infamy. Requires troops + leader.
  • "Rebel Against You": 20+ infamy, some followers try to kill you. Can use Gold Conquest to handle. Use Rewind to reroll participants. Protect critical characters by placing them in multi-turn rituals.
  • Final Challenge to Sultan: If your propaganda is insufficient, Gold Conquest can justify fighting the Sultan.

Silver-tier Conquest:

  • Wound the Rhino: Beast combat
  • Hunt the Fierce Lion: Beast combat
  • Famous Hamar Brothers: Human combat

Bronze/Rock-tier Conquest:

  • "The Proud One" (Methinks): Protagonist climbs mountain alone, 2 days, survival check. Limited to Rock/Bronze.
  • Haunted House: Various difficulties
  • Abandoned House by Wanderers: Variable
  • Riot Outside the City: Bronze
  • Wild Dog Pack: Low tier

Conquest Strategy: Gold Conquest is the second-hardest card type. Building troops through Riel's questline is essential for the late game. If you don't have troops, swap Gold Conquest immediately.

Multi-Card Management

The 4-Card Hand

You can hold up to 4 cards simultaneously (in some situations). The key is managing the queue so that breaking one card doesn't consume an event needed for another.

Event Conservation

Some events can only break one card:

  • House expansion: 1 Extravagance (any tier)
  • Home Debauchery: 1 Carnality (per location, per character)
  • Court Duel: 1 Bloodshed

Other events can break multiple cards:

  • Certain adventure events can break multiple low-tier cards
  • The Haunted House can break Rock/Bronze Bloodshed or Carnality
  • Some multi-day events can be used for multiple cards across their duration

The "Card Stacking" Strategy

If you have multiple low-tier cards of the same type:

  • Look for events that can break multiple cards
  • Use multi-day rituals that overlap with multiple card deadlines
  • Prioritize the card with the closest deadline

The Swap System Deep Dive

When to Swap (Priority Order)

  1. Gold card you can't handle: Immediate swap
  2. Bloodshed card with no target: Swap if no kill plan within 3 days
  3. Conquest card with no troops: Swap if Gold and no troops
  4. Duplicate card type: If you already have that type and limited events, swap
  5. Carnality with no valid targets: Swap if you haven't prepared targets

When NOT to Swap

  • Extravagance (usually): Easiest to break, save swaps for harder cards
  • Low-tier cards: Usually manageable with basic events
  • Card with matching queued event: Why swap when you have a solution?

The Magician's Extra Draw

You can ask the Magician for extra cards beyond the weekly draw. This is high-risk, high-reward:

  • Risk: May draw an even harder card you can't handle
  • Reward: More cards to break means more progress toward completion
  • Strategy: Only request extra draws when you have multiple queued events and are confident in your break capacity

New Game+ Card Changes (44-Card Deck)

With the Fate Shop "Add Card Option":

  • Carnality: All tiers overflow heavily. King's harem + various characters handle most.
  • Extravagance: Many rituals are better done early, but cards are plentiful. Can still stall if you use house expansion too early.
  • Bloodshed: Still the hardest to manage. Must predict Bloodshed events and prepare targets.
  • Conquest: Gold becomes nearly impossible without troops. Silver overflows. Bronze/Rock have many options.

The Card Break Checklist

When a new card is drawn, ask yourself:

  • What type and tier is this card?
  • Do I have a queued event that can break it?
  • If not, can I create one within 7 days?
  • Is this card harder than others I'm holding? Should I swap?
  • Does breaking this card consume an event I need for another card?
  • Can I delay breaking this card until day 7 for more options?

Advanced Card Combos

The "Chain Break"

  1. Use a multi-day event for your first card
  2. During that event, set up a second event for your next card
  3. Chain breaks together to clear multiple cards in a single week

The "Event Double-Dip"

Some events have multiple uses or can satisfy multiple card types:

  • The Haunted House can break Bloodshed OR Carnality (plan ahead which you need more)
  • Certain court events can satisfy Bloodshed or Conquest depending on choices
  • The "Vanity, Vanity" chain can break multiple card types across its duration

The "Infamy Engine"

Deliberately build infamy to unlock:

  • Challenge events (break Bloodshed)
  • Conquest events (break Conquest)
  • Gold income from challengers
  • But manage the downside (blocks Good Name events, dangerous at 20+)

Mastering card combinations in Sultan's Game is the ultimate test of strategic planning. Every card is a puzzle, every event is a piece, and your week is the board. Plan ahead, queue wisely, and never let the deck outpace your solutions.
