Sultan's Game Alliance & Politics Guide: Court Intrigue

The political system in Sultan's Game is as dangerous as any battlefield. Court intrigue, alliance building, and the revolutionary plot can elevate you to the throne—or cost you your head. This guide covers every aspect of political survival and dominance.

Court Politics Fundamentals

The Court Layout

  • Every day, you attend court where nobles are positioned beneath the Sultan
  • These nobles are not decorative—they actively threaten you unless you bring allies
  • If the court is filled with your followers, you can skip sending defenders and act freely
  • Presenting Sultan cards or tribute to the Sultan may yield unexpected solutions, allies, or complete questlines

Defending Against Slander

Standard Defense:

  • Send a noble follower to defend against slander
  • The follower consumes an action but protects you from accumulating suspicion
  • Without defense, slander cards accumulate

Lady Becky Defense (Best):

  • Send Lady Becky to court defense
  • Yields 1 gold instead of a rock intel card
  • With Becky present, court becomes nearly consequence-free
  • Unlock: Must be purchased through the Fate Shop

Sultan's Suspicion Mechanism

How It Works:

  • The Sultan accumulates "boredom" over time
  • If you neglect court attendance, he believes slander
  • At 3 slander cards, "Sultan's Suspicion" triggers
  • This begins a patience countdown: -1 per turn, reaching 0 means game over

Countermeasures:

  • Tribute gold to the Sultan
  • Contribute intel cards to gain power
  • Regular court attendance prevents suspicion buildup
  • Never let slander reach 3 cards

The Revolution: Nawfal's Path

Complete Revolution Questline

Step 1: Fundraising

  • Place 3 gold in donation → receive a small note → drag into "Methinks" to trigger "Secret Meeting" (no Sultan card needed)

Step 2: The Convergence

  • Requires 11+ power → triggers "Clear Convergence" event
  • Requires Physique + Wisdom check → help eliminate traitors

Step 3: The Poor

  • Donate 3 gold again → triggers "What Do the Poor Need"
  • Place yourself and followers to gather "Vague Thoughts"

Step 4: The Malicious Trick

  • Requires 15+ power → triggers "Malicious Trick"
  • Place 6 gold → wait 3 days → trigger "Malicious Joke" → don't place anyone, continue 6 gold → receive "Chancellor's Sex Scandal"

Step 5: Ally or Enemy

  • Trigger "Ally or Enemy" → tell Nawfal the truth

Step 6: Prisoners and Kidnappers

  • Chancellor attempts to assassinate Nawfal
  • Stealth + Combat check → success allows you to decide whether to kill the Chancellor

Step 7: The Nursery

  • After sub-quest completion, trigger "Whimsical Idea"
  • Place 10 gold to build the Nursery → Nawfal becomes teacher → generates Gold idea "Revolutionary Concept"

Step 8: The Revolution Plan

  • In "Headless Dragon," combine "Regicide Plan + Revolutionary Concept"
  • Creates "Revolutionary Plan" (or "Regicide Plan")

Step 9: The Regime Change

  • Use "Revolutionary Plan" in "Regime Change" to trigger the revolution ending

Revolution Branch: Reform vs. Tradition

The revolution's outcome depends on the difference between Reform and Tradition values:

Difference Outcome Ending Name
≤2 Balanced Path "New Sun Book"
Reform > Tradition Radical Reform "Fall of the New Sun" (only 77 days)
Tradition > Reform Conservative "Cage of the Sun"

Strategic Implication: Manage your Reform and Tradition choices throughout the playthrough to control your ending.

Political Factions

The Reform Faction

  • Led by Nawfal and progressive nobles
  • Advocates for change, equality, and new systems
  • Associated with the revolution's radical path

The Traditional Faction

  • Led by the Chancellor and conservative nobles
  • Supports the existing order and hierarchy
  • Associated with the revolution's conservative path

The Neutral/Court Faction

  • Various nobles who shift based on your actions
  • Can be manipulated through gifts, alliances, and threats

Alliance Building Strategy

Early Game Alliances

  1. Maggie (Wife): Your most loyal ally from the start
  2. Faraj (Noble Admirer): Can be recruited early; useful for court politics
  3. Jabal (Royal Guard): Easiest to turn against the Sultan

Mid Game Alliances

  1. Riel (Barbarian Warrior): Military powerhouse for revolution troops
  2. Nawfal (Revolutionary): Essential for the revolution path
  3. Hassan (Poet): Cultural influence and revolutionary propaganda

Late Game Alliances

  1. Lady Becky: Court dominance
  2. Badriyyah: Divine/mystical path alliances
  3. Lumera: Post-ascension assistance

Power Management

Power Thresholds and Their Consequences

Power Level Event Triggered Strategic Note
4 Chancellor's Summons Delay this as long as possible
8 Wife sends 2 equipment items Positive event, welcome it
11 Clear Convergence Required for revolution path
15 Malicious Trick Activates Nawfal's nursery quest
20+ Various high-tier events Manage carefully

Power Accumulation Methods

  • Tribute gold to the Sultan
  • Contribute intel cards at court
  • Complete political events successfully
  • Certain story choices grant power

Power Management Strategy

  • Early game: Keep power low to avoid Chancellor's Summons
  • Mid game: Push power to 11+ for revolution progression
  • Late game: Maximize power for endgame political events
  • Avoid premature triggers: Don't hit 4 power until you're ready for the Chancellor

Court Event Manipulation

Using Sultan Cards in Court

  • Presenting Sultan cards to the Sultan can yield unexpected solutions
  • Some cards create new allies when shown in court
  • Others unlock complete questlines
  • The Sultan only accepts cards matching the current court attendees

Slander Card Management

  • Slander accumulates to 3 cards before triggering suspicion
  • Each court day, slander may be generated by opposing nobles
  • Sending defenders prevents slander accumulation
  • With Lady Becky, slander becomes a source of income rather than a threat

Political Survival Tips

  1. Never skip court: Absence breeds suspicion
  2. Always bring an ally: Even a weak defender is better than none
  3. Watch the Chancellor: His events are numerous but often reward-poor; delay him when possible
  4. Invest in power strategically: Some thresholds are helpful, others are dangerous
  5. Track Reform vs. Tradition: Your choices throughout the game determine your revolution ending
  6. Use the "Methinks" slot for politics: Many political events can be triggered or advanced through the "Methinks" system

The Political Endgame

Your political journey culminates in one of several outcomes:

  • Revolution: Overthrow the Sultan and become the new ruler (or appoint a replacement)
  • Escape: Flee the country with your allies
  • Divine Descent: Transcend politics through mystical means
  • Submission: Serve the Sultan (or worse)

The path you choose depends on which alliances you built, which questlines you pursued, and how you managed your political capital. Court politics in Sultan's Game is a long game—plan your moves from day one, and the throne may be yours.
