R.E.P.O. Common Mistakes

After analyzing hundreds of player deaths and failed runs, these are the most common mistakes that get players killed in R.E.P.O. Learn them, avoid them, and your survival rate will skyrocket.

Movement Mistakes

Mistake #1: Sprinting Everywhere

Why it's bad: Sprinting makes noise that attracts monsters, and it drains your stamina. If you're caught with empty stamina, you can't escape.

The fix: Walk by default. Only sprint when a monster is actively chasing you or when you need to cover open ground quickly.

Mistake #2: Not Crouching Near Monsters

Why it's bad: The Stalker and other sound-based monsters can hear you walking from 10+ meters away. Crouching reduces your noise to near zero.

The fix: Crouch (Ctrl) whenever you're within 2 rooms of a known monster position. Get up only when you're sure the area is clear.

Mistake #3: Jumping for No Reason

Why it's bad: Jumping makes noise and doesn't help you escape most monsters. It also wastes stamina.

The fix: Jump only when necessary (over obstacles, reaching ledges). Never jump "just because."

Looting Mistakes

Mistake #4: Grabbing the First Item You See

Why it's bad: That $500 book isn't worth the risk if there's a $5,000 painting in the next room. Players who grab low-value items early often run out of stamina carrying them when they find better loot.

The fix: Scout first. Identify 2-3 high-value items before grabbing anything. Prioritize by value-to-weight ratio.

Mistake #5: Carrying Too Much

Why it's bad: Overweight players move slowly, can't sprint, and are easy targets. A dead player drops everything.

The fix: Never carry more than 70% of your max capacity. Leave room for emergencies.

Mistake #6: Ignoring Trap Items

Why it's bad: The Music Box, Radio, and Clown Doll attract monsters when grabbed. New players grab them thinking they're normal loot, then get swarmed.

The fix: Learn the visual identifiers of trap items. If an item has a faint red glow or makes noise before you grab it, it's probably a trap.

Mistake #7: Not Checking Item Value Before Grabbing

Why it's bad: You might spend 2 minutes carefully carrying a $300 item when a $5,000 item was in the next room.

The fix: Look at the floating value number above items before grabbing them. If it's under $1,000, consider skipping it unless you're desperate.

Monster Mistakes

Mistake #8: Trying to Fight Monsters

Why it's bad: Weapons only stun monsters temporarily. They can't be killed permanently through combat. Fighting wastes time, stamina, and equipment.

The fix: Flee, hide, or use environmental hazards. Only fight as a last resort.

Mistake #9: Running in a Straight Line

Why it's bad: Most monsters are faster than you in a straight line. The Charger literally kills you if you run straight from it.

The fix: Break line of sight using furniture, doorways, and corners. Zigzag through rooms.

Mistake #10: Not Learning Monster Patterns

Why it's bad: Every monster has predictable behaviors. Players who don't learn them die repeatedly to the same monster.

The fix: Spend 2-3 runs just observing monsters without trying to loot. Learn their patrol routes, detection methods, and weaknesses.

Mistake #11: Panicking When Spotted

Why it's bad: Panic leads to sprinting into dead ends, dropping valuable items, and running into other monsters.

The fix: Train yourself to stay calm. When spotted, immediately identify the nearest escape route and move toward it deliberately. Don't sprint unless you have to.

Team Mistakes

Mistake #12: Splitting Up Too Far

Why it's bad: Players who wander off alone can't be revived if they go down. They're also more likely to attract monsters toward the group.

The fix: Stay within 2 rooms of your teammates. If you can't hear their footsteps, you're too far.

Mistake #13: Not Reviving Teammates

Why it's bad: A downed teammate is a lost asset. Plus, they lose their items, reducing the team's total haul.

The fix: Unless the area is swarming with monsters, ALWAYS attempt a revive. It takes 3 seconds and keeps the team strong.

Mistake #14: Talking Too Loud in Voice Chat

Why it's bad: Proximity voice chat is detected by monsters. Loud players attract monsters to the entire team.

The fix: Use whisper mode (V) when near monsters. Keep callouts short and calm.

Mistake #15: Competing for the Same Items

Why it's bad: Two players going for the same item wastes time and leaves other areas unlooted.

The fix: The Scout should call out ALL items in an area. The team leader decides who gets what based on role and strength upgrades.

Extraction Mistakes

Mistake #16: Being Too Greedy

Why it's bad: Players who stay too long trying to maximize their haul often die with everything. The last $5,000 isn't worth your life.

The fix: When you're at 80% of your personal comfort limit, head to extraction. The safe money is better than the potential money.

Mistake #17: Not Knowing Where Extraction Is

Why it's bad: If you don't know where extraction is, you can't plan your escape route. Players who get lost while fleeing almost always die.

The fix: Identify the extraction point within the first 2 minutes of the run. Check it on your map (TAB) regularly.

Mistake #18: Dropping Items Outside the Extraction Zone

Why it's bad: Items dropped outside the blue extraction zone are NOT extracted. They remain in the level when you leave.

The fix: Make sure you're standing inside the blue glowing area before dropping items. The zone has a radius - stand in the center.

Equipment Mistakes

Mistake #19: Buying Weapons Before Upgrades

Why it's bad: Weapons are consumable (one use per run). Upgrades are permanent. A player with Speed +2 and no weapon survives longer than a player with a weapon and no upgrades.

The fix: Priority order: Speed upgrades → Strength upgrades → Health upgrades → then weapons and tools.

Mistake #20: Not Bringing Healing Items

Why it's bad: Players without healing items die to minor monster encounters that a $1,000 Medkit would have saved them from.

The fix: Always carry at least one Small Medkit ($500). It's the cheapest insurance policy in the game.

The "Big Three" Mistakes

If you only fix three things, fix these:

  1. Sprinting everywhere → Walk by default, sprint only when needed
  2. Being too greedy → Extract when you have enough, don't risk death for the last item
  3. Not reviving teammates → A live team is stronger than a dead team

Self-Assessment Checklist

Before your next run, check how many of these mistakes you've made in previous runs:

  • I sprint even when there are no monsters nearby
  • I grab items without checking their value first
  • I ignore trap items and get surprised when they make noise
  • I try to fight monsters instead of fleeing
  • I run in straight lines when chased
  • I wander too far from my team
  • I don't revive downed teammates
  • I talk loudly in voice chat near monsters
  • I stay too long trying to get "one more item"
  • I don't know where extraction is before I start looting
  • I buy weapons before permanent upgrades
  • I don't carry healing items

Count: If you checked 3 or more, focus on fixing those habits before worrying about advanced strategies.

FAQ

What's the #1 mistake new players make? Sprinting everywhere. It's the root cause of most early-game deaths.

What's the #1 mistake experienced players make? Being too greedy. The difference between a $20,000 run and a $25,000 run isn't worth dying over.

How do I break bad habits? Consciously practice the correct behavior for 5 runs. After that, it becomes automatic.

Should I be embarrassed about making these mistakes? No. Every experienced player made all of these mistakes. The difference is they learned from them.

Summary

These 20 mistakes account for approximately 90% of player deaths in R.E.P.O. Fix the "Big Three" (sprinting, greed, not reviving) and you'll immediately see your survival rate improve. Then work through the rest one by one. Remember: in R.E.P.O., survival is more important than loot. A dead player carries $0.
