R.E.P.O. Advanced Combat Guide: Monster Takedown Strategies
While R.E.P.O. is primarily a stealth and extraction game, knowing how to fight effectively can save runs and increase profits. This guide covers advanced combat techniques beyond basic weapon usage.
Pit Kills: The Most Efficient Method
Pushing monsters into pits instantly kills them. This is the most resource-efficient combat method.
Requirements
- Sufficient Strength Upgrades to lift/push the monster
- A nearby pit (McJannek Station has the most)
- Coordination for heavy monsters (2+ players = strength equivalent of 4 upgrades)
Technique
- Stun the monster with a Prodzap, Boltzap, or Stun Grenade
- While stunned, the monster's weight is drastically reduced
- Grab and push/pull toward the pit
- Release when the monster is over the edge
Monster-Specific Pit Strategy
- Jumping monsters (Chef, Headman): These can leap out of pits. Push them in from directly above or use multiple stuns
- Flying monsters (Apex Predator, Birthday Boy): Must be stunned first or repeatedly knocked back, otherwise they'll fly out
- Heavy monsters (Clown, Trudge): Require maximum strength or teamwork
Item Kills: Turning Loot into Weapons
Any valuable item can damage monsters through physics impact.
Damage Mechanics
- Damage depends on item momentum and weight
- Light tap = minimal damage
- Heavy swing = 5-120 damage depending on item
- Ideal: Use items that can also stun monsters
Best Items for Killing
| Item | Damage Potential | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sledge Hammer (weapon) | 150 | Best weapon damage |
| Shotgun | 300 (6x50) | Point-blank only |
| Inflatable Hammer | 250 (explosion) | 5% random chance |
| C.A.R.T. Laser | 800 | Maximum weapon damage |
| Heavy items (Big+) | 45+ | Physics damage |
Item Kill Technique
- Stun the monster
- Position a medium/heavy item between you and the monster
- Build momentum by swinging the item
- Strike as the monster begins to stand
- Repeat until dead
Monster Manipulation: Making Monsters Fight Each Other
The Huntsman Trick
Huntsman is completely blind and fires at any sound. Use this to your advantage:
- Drop items near Huntsman to make him fire
- Position other monsters between you and Huntsman
- Huntsman shots deal massive damage (100 per hit) to other monsters
- This can kill most danger level 1-2 monsters in 1-2 shots
The Clown Laser Trick
Clown fires a laser beam when it sees you. Lure the Clown to face other monsters:
- The laser deals 100 damage per tick to anything in its path
- Can quickly melt groups of smaller monsters
- Requires careful positioning to avoid hitting teammates
The Banger Bomb
Bangers explode on death, dealing 30 damage in a radius:
- Grab a Banger and throw it at groups of monsters
- The explosion can chain-react if multiple Bangers are nearby
- Free damage with minimal risk
The Cleanup Crew Head
Cleanup Crew's detached head can be thrown and bounces, dealing massive damage to other monsters. This is one of the highest-damage free attacks in the game.
Team Combat Formations
"The Pincer" (2+ Players)
- One player baits the monster while another attacks from behind
- Works especially well with melee weapons
- The bait player should have Health Upgrades and Stamina
"The Stun Train" (3+ Players)
- Player 1 stuns with Prodzap/Boltzap
- Player 2 follows up with heavy weapon damage
- Player 3 grabs the monster and throws it into a pit
- Cycle repeats for next monster
"The Bait and Switch" (2+ Players)
- One player with Scout vehicle drives in circles around monsters
- Other players attack while monsters are focused on the vehicle
- Vehicle drivers are completely safe from monster damage
Solo Combat Survival
Solo players must be more selective about fights:
When to Fight
- Monster is blocking your extraction path
- Monster dropped an Enemy Valuable and you want the orb
- You have superior positioning (high ground, pit nearby)
When to Run
- Multiple danger level 3 monsters
- Low health (below 50 HP without Health Upgrades)
- No escape route identified
- High-value items in your inventory that could be damaged
Solo Combat Loadout
- Weapon: Prodzap or Boltzap (reliable stuns, no friendly fire risk)
- Emergency: Stun Grenade (quick throw, guaranteed 15-second stun)
- Mobility: Tumble Launch + Extra Jump for escape
- Healing: Always carry at least 1 Small Health Pack
The Respawn Game
Understanding monster respawn timers is crucial for combat planning:
| Game Time | Respawn Timer |
|---|---|
| 0-10 min | 4-5 minutes |
| 10-20 min | 3.2-4 minutes |
| 20-30 min | 2.4-3 minutes |
| 30-40 min | 1.6-2 minutes |
| 40-50 min | 0.8-1 minutes |
| 50+ min / Final Extraction | 1 second |
Strategic Implication: Killing monsters early in a level gives you the longest safe period. Late-game kills respawn almost immediately, making combat less valuable than avoidance.
Master these advanced combat techniques and you'll not only survive longer but also profit more from monster drops.
