R.E.P.O. Advanced Monster Tactics
This guide assumes you already know the basic monster behaviors. Here we cover advanced techniques for manipulating, avoiding, and even killing monsters using environmental hazards and game mechanics.
Advanced Stun Techniques
The Momentum Stun
Monsters can be stunned by hitting them with heavy objects while they're moving. The heavier the object and the faster it's moving, the longer the stun.
How to execute:
- Grab a medium-to-heavy item (statue, furniture piece)
- Wait for the monster to move toward you
- Throw the item directly at it while it's walking/running
- The impact will stun it for 3-5 seconds depending on the item's weight
Pro Tip: This is more effective than most melee weapons and doesn't cost anything.
Chain Stunning
If you're playing with a team, you can chain stuns on a single monster to keep it down indefinitely.
Rotation:
- Player 1 hits with melee weapon → 2s stun
- Player 2 hits immediately after → 3s stun (stacks partially)
- Player 3 hits → extends stun further
- Return to Player 1 whose cooldown has ended
Important: This only works with coordination. Miss the timing and the monster recovers.
The Door Stun
Closing a door on a monster as it walks through will stun it for 1-2 seconds. This is faster than swinging a weapon and costs nothing.
Best used for: Quick escapes when a monster is right behind you.
Environmental Hazards (Advanced)
Pitfalls and Drops
Every location has bottomless pits or deep drops. Pushing a monster into one will "kill" it for the remainder of the run (it won't respawn until the next run).
How to execute:
- Find a pit or drop near a monster's patrol route
- Lure the monster to the edge using sound or line of sight
- Throw a heavy object at it to knock it backward into the pit
- Alternatively, use the Inflatable Hammer to knock it back
Locations with good pits:
- Headman Manor: Stairwell drops, broken floor sections in the attic
- McJannek Station: Platform edges, maintenance shaft openings
- Museum of Human Art: Grand staircase, loading dock drop
- Swiftbroom Academy: Tower stairs, courtyard well
The Heavy Object Kill
A monster can be "crushed" by dropping a very heavy object on it from above. This requires setup but is a guaranteed removal for the run.
Setup:
- Find a balcony or upper floor overlooking a monster's patrol
- Carry a large object (piano, sculpture, safe) to the edge
- Drop it when the monster walks below
- The object will "kill" the monster and remain there
Note: The object is usually destroyed in the process, so don't use high-value items.
Monster-on-Monster Combat
Aggroed monsters can be lured into other monsters. They will sometimes fight each other, stunning both for extended periods.
How to execute:
- Get Monster A's attention
- Run toward Monster B's patrol route
- Let Monster A see Monster B (they're hostile to each other)
- Hide and watch them fight
- Both will be stunned for 5-8 seconds
Best combinations:
- The Charger + The Stalker = The Charger can't charge effectively while the Stalker is close
- The Watcher + any mobile monster = The Watcher's beam will trigger other monsters' detection
Solo Advanced Techniques
The Loop Escape
When solo and cornered, use the level's geometry to create an infinite loop that the monster can't follow effectively.
Best loops:
- Headman Manor: The ground floor hallway loop around the foyer
- McJannek Station: The platform loop around the main building
- Swiftbroom Academy: The classroom hallway loop on the second floor
Technique: Run the loop, and when the monster takes a shortcut, change direction. Most monsters will overshoot your position.
The Crouch-Sprint Technique
Monsters detect sound based on your movement speed. By crouching for 2 seconds to drop your "noise level," then sprinting for 3 seconds, then crouching again, you can move faster than pure crouching while making less total noise than pure sprinting.
Timing:
- Crouch: 2 seconds (noise drops to 0)
- Sprint: 3 seconds (noise spikes but starts low)
- Crouch: 2 seconds (noise resets)
- Repeat
This is about 30% faster than pure crouching but generates 40% less total noise than pure sprinting.
The Fake Drop
Solo players can fake dropping items to create sound distractions. Most monsters investigate the sound of a dropped item.
How to execute:
- Pick up a small worthless item (stone, stick, trash)
- Move to a position where you want the monster to go
- Crouch-drop the item (Q while crouching)
- Immediately move away in the opposite direction
- The monster will investigate the drop location for 3-5 seconds
Team Advanced Techniques
The Split Bait
In a 4+ player team, split into two groups. Group A makes noise to attract monsters, Group B loots the area the monsters just left.
Key: Group A must be faster than the monsters they're attracting. If not, this becomes a sacrifice play instead.
The Pinch Maneuver
Two players approach a monster from opposite directions. Both throw items simultaneously. The monster gets stunned by both impacts and is knocked in an unpredictable direction - usually away from both players.
Best for: Clearing a path through a monster-blocked corridor.
The Extraction Blockade
During extraction, one player with the Shield Drone or Inflatable Hammer stands at the extraction point entrance, keeping monsters away while the rest extract their items.
This player should be the last to extract. They sacrifice their personal loot to ensure the team keeps theirs.
The "Deep Kill" Methods
These are methods to remove monsters from the current run permanently. They require setup but are worth it for clearing difficult areas.
Method 1: Pit Drop (Easiest)
- Setup: None needed, just positioning
- Execution: Throw heavy object or use Inflatable Hammer
- Success rate: ~80% if monster is near the edge
- Risk: Low
Method 2: Heavy Crush (Medium)
- Setup: Need upper floor access + heavy object
- Execution: Drop object from above
- Success rate: ~60% (depends on timing)
- Risk: Medium (object might miss)
Method 3: Monster Conflict (Hardest to control)
- Setup: Need two monsters near each other
- Execution: Lure one into the other
- Success rate: ~40% (monsters don't always fight)
- Risk: High (might attract both monsters to you instead)
FAQ
Can you kill all monsters in a run? Theoretically yes, but it's extremely difficult and time-consuming. Most players kill 1-2 problem monsters and avoid the rest.
Do killed monsters stay dead if you revive a teammate? Yes, monsters killed via environmental hazards stay dead for the entire run.
What's the best monster to kill first? The Watcher. It alerts other monsters and blocks important routes. Removing it makes the entire run easier.
Does killing monsters affect your score? No, there's no score penalty or bonus for killing monsters. The only benefit is making the run safer.
Can you kill monsters with the truck? No. The truck is invulnerable to monsters but cannot damage them.
Summary
Advanced monster tactics in R.E.P.O. revolve around environmental manipulation rather than direct combat. Pits, heavy objects, and monster conflicts are your most powerful tools. Remember: every monster you kill makes the run safer, but also takes time and risk. Weigh the cost against the reward before attempting a kill.
