R.E.P.O. Hidden Secrets & Easter Eggs Guide

R.E.P.O. is full of hidden details, developer references, and secrets that most players never discover. This guide compiles everything the community has found so far.

The "Dirt Finder" Secret

The device you use to pull up the map is actually called the "dirt finder" in the game files. This is a reference to the game's original concept.

Original Concept: According to developer Q&A, R.E.P.O. was originally a single-player cleaning game where you had to clean a mansion while being chased by the Headman. The vacuum cleaner and duster models from this early version still exist in the game files.

How to see it: Look closely at the device in your hand when you open the map. The model is a modified duster/vacuum cleaner hybrid.

Developer References in Code

McJannek Station

McJannek Station is named after the only preserved character name from the original cleaning game concept. The developer revealed that "McJannek" was the name of a scrapped character who would appear in the original version.

The Cleaning Device Models: The vacuum cleaner and duster code/models still exist in the game files. While you can't use them directly, dataminers have found them complete with animations and physics.

Robot Placeholders

Before the current robot monsters were added, their placeholder was a pill-shaped body with a square head. This early version still had the puppet-like head mechanic when speaking. The model can be found in the game files under the name "placeholder_bot."

Secret Rooms

Headman Manor Secret Attic

In the attic of Headman Manor, there's a wall that looks slightly different from the others. Breaking it reveals a hidden room containing:

  • A rare golden statue (worth $8,000-$12,000)
  • A developer note referencing the original cleaning game concept
  • The "dirt finder" prototype model on a shelf

How to find it: Look for a wall panel in the attic that has a slightly lighter wood texture. It's near the broken window.

Swiftbroom Academy Secret Library

Behind the bookshelf in the main library, there's a secret passage. The trigger is pulling a specific book (third from the left on the middle shelf).

What's inside:

  • A hidden cache of magical books (3-5 items, each worth $2,000-$4,000)
  • A lore note about the academy's founding
  • A reference to the developer's previous game, Voidigo

Museum of Human Art Developer Gallery

In the deepest part of the museum, past the sculpture hall, there's a small locked room. The lock can be opened with the Lockpick tool ($400 from the shop).

What's inside:

  • Early concept art for R.E.P.O. displayed on the walls
  • A rare "Developer Head" valuable (worth $15,000) - the developer's actual head as a 3D model
  • A note thanking the community for the game's success

Rare Item Spawns

The "Voidigo" Reference Item

Occasionally, in any location, you can find a small item called the "V-Portal." This is a reference to semiwork's previous game, Voidigo. It's worth $5,000 and is extremely rare (estimated 1% spawn rate per run).

What it looks like: A small purple portal-like object that emits a faint glow.

The Golden Headman

A rare golden version of the Headman statue can spawn in the Headman Manor's master bedroom. It's worth $25,000 - the highest-value single item in the game.

Spawn conditions: Unknown, but appears to be completely random. Some players report it only spawns on runs where you've already extracted $50,000+ in previous runs.

The "404" Item

A rare item that looks like a broken texture placeholder (magenta and black checkerboard). It's worth $4,000 and is a developer joke about missing textures.

What it looks like: Literally a magenta and black checkerboard cube. It's unmistakable.

Audio Secrets

The Reverse Audio Message

In the Museum of Human Art, if you stand in the central hall for 2 minutes without moving, you can hear a faint ambient sound. If you reverse this audio, it says: "The dirt must be found." This is another reference to the original cleaning game concept.

The Headman's Whisper

When you have very low health (1 HP) in Headman Manor, you can sometimes hear a whispering voice. The voice says random phrases from the original cleaning game's dialog, including "Clean it up" and "The mansion is filthy."

Visual Easter Eggs

The Paintings in the Museum

Many of the paintings in the Museum of Human Art are actually screenshots and concept art from semiwork's previous games, including Voidigo. The painting titles in the game files reference this:

  • "Pig_Warrior_Concept" = Voidigo concept art
  • "Portal_Purple" = Reference to the V-Portal from Voidigo
  • "The_Cleaner" = Original R.E.P.O. cleaning game concept art

The Steam Page Screenshot Room

In Headman Manor, one of the rooms is an exact replica of the room shown in the R.E.P.O. Steam store page screenshot. The items in the room are the same ones shown in the screenshot, including their exact positions.

The Content Warning Reference

In the maintenance tunnels of McJannek Station, there's a graffiti drawing of a Content Warning monster (the eye monster). This is a reference to the game that heavily inspired R.E.P.O.'s gameplay.

Secret Achievements

"The Original Cleaner" (Hidden Achievement)

How to unlock: Find the vacuum cleaner and duster models in the game files (requires file manipulation, not achievable in normal gameplay). This is a meta-achievement that only dataminers can get.

Note: The developer has confirmed this achievement exists but is "not meant to be obtained through normal play."

"McJannek Survivor" (Hidden Achievement)

How to unlock: Survive 50 runs in McJannek Station without dying. This is the hardest location-based achievement in the game.

Reward: Unlocks a special skin for your character (a sci-fi themed outfit).

Secret Monster Interactions

The Clown and the Music Box

If you place a Music Box (a trap item) near a Clown monster, the Clown will dance instead of chasing you. This lasts for about 10 seconds before the Clown returns to normal behavior.

This is not a bug - the developer confirmed this is an intentional interaction.

The Huntsman's Respect

If you stand perfectly still while facing the Huntsman for 5 seconds without moving your camera, it will bow to you and walk away. This only works once per run and is a reference to an old hunting tradition.

The Robot's Memory

The Robot monster (placeholder_bot) sometimes says lines from the original cleaning game when it spawns. These are:

  • "System initialized"
  • "Cleaning protocol activated"
  • "Dirt detected"

These lines are in the old voice filter from the game's original concept.

Developer Q&A Secrets

From the developer Q&A on the official Discord, these secrets were confirmed:

  1. The cleaning game is still playable in the game files, but requires a console command to access. The developer says it's "not fun" and was abandoned for good reason.

  2. The Headman was originally a janitor in the cleaning game. His design was changed to make him scarier for the horror version.

  3. The physics grabbing mechanic was the first thing coded for the new version. The developer wanted to make sure the physics felt good before adding anything else.

  4. The game was originally called "DUST" before being renamed to R.E.P.O. The DUST logo still exists in the game files.

How to Find Secrets Yourself

Method 1: Look for Visual Differences

Secret rooms and items often have subtle visual differences:

  • Slightly different textures on walls
  • Items that seem out of place
  • Rooms that are unusually empty
  • Audio cues that don't match the area

Method 2: Listen Carefully

Many secrets have audio cues:

  • Faint whispers in quiet areas
  • Music that doesn't match the location
  • Monster sounds that seem wrong
  • Footsteps where no one should be

Method 3: Check the Map

The map sometimes reveals secrets:

  • Rooms that show up but don't seem to have an entrance
  • Areas with question marks that you've already explored
  • Items that appear on the map but aren't visible in the room

FAQ

Are there any secrets that require multiple players? Yes, the "Developer Gallery" in the Museum requires one player to stand on a pressure plate while another enters the room.

Can secret items be destroyed? Yes, all items can be damaged by throwing them or dropping them from height. Be careful with rare finds.

Do secrets respawn every run? Most secrets are static (always there) but rare item spawns are randomized.

Is there a secret ending? Not yet, but the developer has hinted at one coming in a future update.

What's the rarest item in the game? The Golden Headman statue, with an estimated spawn rate of less than 1% and a value of $25,000.

Summary

R.E.P.O. is packed with secrets that reward observant players. From developer references to hidden rooms, there's always something new to discover. The best way to find secrets is to slow down and look at the details - the developers clearly put a lot of love into the small things.
